A science magazine stringing together
culture, philosophy and art.

I joined when the website was still getting off the ground. A small team on 7th Avenue in Manhattan had a clear goal: to build a web publicat—that gave art and philosophy the same weight as science. The idea of doing a quarterly print issue didn’t come up until about a year and a half later, but from the start, the website carried the spirit of a magazine. We published 4 to 6 stories each week and grouped each month around a common theme. The site’s design followed that idea, offering fresh takes on science and culture every month, supported by award-winning illustration and art direction.

Printed Editions
Within the first year or so we had printed some limited run promotional booklets with some of our stories as a means to provide freebies for people to take with them at events. These first booklets were met with such enthusiasm by nearly everyone that the publisher began to consider if Nautilus could support a print quarterly. Alyssa and the team at Point Five were quick to support and help us develop a structure which would bring the stories being told online to live on paper.

	HP

Work Happier
Are you happy back at work? Have the return-to-office blues got you down?

Coming off the back of a pandemic and feeling the grind, HP wanted to partner with T Brand to report on the wellbeing of home-office workers. We gathered survey data with the help of Morning Consult to understand sentiment from respondants regarding their experience working remotely and being called back to the office. We used a combination of smiley face and data oriented visuals to convey feelings and relay survey data in an interactive report which allows readers to find out how HP can help them work happier. Consequently it also allows readers an opportunity to reflect on how they fit into the survey findings.

Concepts and work in progress
We took a freeform approach and cast a wide net when approaching this topic. The team felt it would be too easy to fall into tropes or clichés when depicting a topic which affects most of us personally and which has been covered ad-nauseum. HP were game to hear us out, and we had fun exploring the theme and learning some interesting history along the way.We were interested in expressing the feeling and emotion of being torn away from your comfy bubble of work at home bliss, while acknowledging that that luxury traumatized some of us. In a moodboard of contrasting imagery we traced office culture to it’s roots and capturing some eerie images which just “feel true” to our own relationships with work. Ultimately we landed on the smiley face, as depicted via a pixel art concept which served a a conduit for narrative interpretation – threading a needle between both positive and negative reactions to the survey.

	Pure Storage

A.I. Ready Storage
A.I. runs on data, making data the backbone of every A.I.-powered application, from office productivity apps to self-driving cars. And because of challenges around data, the business users of those applications are worried.
We teamed up with Ana Miminoshvili to create a series of illustrations which represent the 4 pillars of Pure Storage data solutions. We designed a page and treated the illustrations with a simple format; it allowed the visuals come to the forefront and allowed for an elegant reading experience with subtle animation.

What We Owe the Future, William MacAskill
Leveraging concepts from William MacAskill’s new book, the goal was to increase awareness for the author and his ideas. In What We Owe the Future, philosopher William MacAskill argues for a perspective he calls longtermism: that positively influencing the long-term future is a key moral priority of our time. From this perspective, it’s not enough merely to undo climate change. We must ensure that civilization would rebound if it collapsed; prevent the end of moral progress; and prepare for a world where the smartest beings on the planet are digital, not human.

I led design and art direction, choosing to work with Ibrahim Rayintakath to explore these ideas and symbolic scenes.
We play with metaphors used by the author that compare humanity in our age today to that of a teenager, “living without regard for consequence, unaware that today’s choices will shape our shared future.”

	Mass General Brigham
Hacking the Immune System
Every day, countless stories of hope and triumph unfold in a healthcare system of five nationally ranked hospitals and two renowned academic medical centers. These stories seem like the stuff of legend; truths stranger and more compelling than any fiction. As such, they deserve to be told, unfiltered, by the voices who lived them.
In a storytelling format known as oral history, T Brand worked with MGB to uncover two stories that encapsulated its breadth and depth as a healthcare system and research center. Compiled through a series of in-depth interviews, we heard directly, sans narrator, from doctors, nurses, patients, and family members as they recounted episodes that brought to bear the full muscle of the MGB system for positive patient outcomes.

	Chanel
The Anatomy of the 55.55
In 2021, Chanel created an exquisite necklace to honor the 100th anniversary of their iconic fragrance Chanel N°5. T Brand Studio was tasked with telling the story behind this masterpiece necklace, about how its breathtaking craftsmanship and design were inspired by the legendary Nº5 perfume. We comissioned photographer Laziz Hamani to meticulously capture the necklace using composite photography to capture the depth and clarity of the diamonds. The incredibly detailed design was born of a commemoration of Coco Chanel’s signature fragrance. In the center lies a flawless 55.55-carat diamond, an unprecedented technical feat.

	An Healthcare Revolution
A.I. is the Game Changer Healthcare Needs
The data generated in the health care industry increases by 48 percent every year. The amount produced in 2020 alone could exceed 2.3 zettabytes, or 2.3 trillion gigabytes. That’s the amount of data it would take to watch 262 million years straight of HD movies. At the same time, even as the volume and complexity of data are increasing, the time that medical professionals have to spend with patients and to assess their data is decreasing. “This is just one reason why health care is an area where A.I. is tremendously helpful,” Dr. Dunleavy says.
That’s because A.I. can instantly sort through millions of variables and provide recommendations to doctors, insurers, pharmacies and just about anyone else involved in a patient’s care.

	Art Direction
The concept is grounded the in visualizing digital aspects of technology; servers, data sets and medical devices with the goal to extract the relationship doctors have with patients and their health data. The human element is represented as the driving force for the technology. Technology and data motifs drew us initially towards in Jon’s work. The way we used pixels and bits within the patient’s figure suggests that data about patients bodies can be quantified using AI.

	Cartier
The Genesis of Icons
History, Design, Culture. These three threads of evolution, present in every one of Cartier’s iconic designs, represent the ways in which Cartier has been at the forefront of our collective imagination for the past 100 years.
‘The great Paris jeweler, Cartier’ continues to this day to inspire the world’s most exceptional people, with icons born of the most important transformational moments of our era. Cartier’s obsessive design principles — have manifested not just in Santos’ legendary reputation, but many of the maison’s pieces in years since. Chapter 1: The Genesis Of Cartier Icons ︎︎︎Chapter 2: New York Love By Design ︎︎︎Chapter 3: At The Forefront Of Cultural Transformation ︎︎︎

Typography and Color
Reflecting the theme of “then and now,” as well as embodying the progressive design thinking vs traditions of Cartier, we combined two typefaces. Leading with a Serif reflects the elegance of Cartier’s designs throughout the ages, juxtaposed with a Sans Serif body copy style.Taking cues from the official colors of Cartier, the palette uses subdued hues to differentiate the characteristics of each chapters theme.
